Again, I arrived at Gilrein's early enough to get to talk to the band...Nice! I'm on a roll here. I briefly met the guys that make this band "Trick Bag" what it is and let me tell you' they are a bunch of cool cats. The band mostly plays all over New England but I believe this show was their debut for Worcester.
Once it time came to play the 1st set they wasted no time and got right into it with two instrumentals up eat back to back. Then slipped into "Fire on the Bayou". I tell you of you like the Hammond organ with the Leslie sound your going to like this band. Mark Longo plays the keys and shares the lead vocal spot with the guitar player Mike Crutcher. Now you won't see the Hammond B3 on stage because he plays through a comparable keyboard. You will see the ole' Hammond Leslie spinning away. Nice sound!
Trick Bag falls nicely into the styles of funk and R&B with elements of Caribbean/Island music. At times they sound like a jam band. The music is very danceable. Check it out here;
Some songs like "On the strip" feature their funk n' slap bass player Mike "Squid" Rush. The drums were great sounding and tuned in perfectly. On the drums is Russ Lane who lays the beat down for Mike to play off of. Russ has some cool beats going on in this song. If you can't dance to this song, you better hang it up. A great thing about checking out bands like this live is that you get to hear songs that are not yet released. They played selections off their new Album not yet released like "bail out".
Trick Bag is fun bunch of guys to watch and they clearly love what they do. Next time they're in the area check them out.
